February 15, 2007: For two years I avoided using password protection on FGWallpaper.
Password protection tends to confuse people new to the internet and/or new to download sites. And I do so like to be Newbie-Friendly.
But for those same two years, I have been battling
"hotlinking" -- people who link
directly to images on MY server to display on THEIR web site.
When one or two sites hotlink to an image it's an annoyance.
But now there are well OVER 1,000 sites hotlinking to the great big honkin' free wallpaper files on this site.
Now, why anyone would WANT to use a 600K desktop wallpaper file as a web site background, I do not know...
but it has put an excruciating stress on my servers and at times has actually made MY web site inaccessible to MY visitors.
I have a problem with that. A BIG problem.
So, all the image files are now password protected and will not display on other web sites.
Of course, YOU can still download them for free to use on your desktop.
I'm hoping this move will dissuade people from hotlinking... but even if it doesn't, they won't be sucking down my bandwidth any more (because the files
won't load).
So, sorry for the inconvenience of password protection, but it's a necessity to keep the site up and running.
